Latest figures released in 2023 suggest that 1 out of 4 (approximately 7 per class) school-aged children are experiencing mental distress. When difficulties are not worked through, it can affect pupils' behaviour and engagement in class. By addressing these problems, art therapy can improve concentration, confidence and academic attainment.
Art therapy can help children understand their feelings through images. This is really helpful if they find it hard to talk about their feelings and thoughts or struggle with their speech.

The creative process is integral to art therapy. It encourages children to think about feelings and experiences whilst making art. As it is not an art class, the focus is not on making a finished product or learning artistic skills; there is no 'good' or 'bad' art in art therapy!
It is really important that sessions take place at the same time each week, in the same familiar space that is private and uninterrupted so that children feel safe and comfortable to relax and be creative.
Sessions last for up to 1 hour. Depending on the aims of therapy, which are agreed at the start, sessions may be offered short term (about 8 weeks) or for longer if needed.
