What is Art Therapy?

Therapuetic communication

Art Therapy uses art materials and the images created to help explore who we are, to show the feelings and thoughts that we cannot put into words.

Self expression

Together with the support of the art therapist, clients can begin to find the right words to talk about their feelings and difficulties.

Processing experiences

This helps the client to begin to understand their experiences which may help to cope with them, leading to emotional change and personal growth.

My Services

Sessions

During 1 to 1 sessions children are offered a choice of art materials to use and are free to express any thoughts and feelings they may wish to. However, if the child would like help to begin, themes and supporting materials may also be suggested by the art therapist.

Children are invited to make pictures, art objects or tell stories using images. Together, we look at what is made and think about the feelings in the pictures and stories. Art therapy is particularly helpful for children who struggle to express complex feelings or disturbing experiences verbally - they are given the opportunity to communicate these to the therapist through their art and associated stories.

Assessments, reviews and reports

As an art therapist, I am an Allied Health Professional, and am responsible to communicate within the mulit-disciplinary team supporting the children. This may involve parents, teachers, support workers, social workers and GPs to ensure the most appropriate support for each individual child.

Whilst what is created and discussed in art therapy sessions remains confidential, if a potential risk of harm is identified, I follow the Safeguarding policies of both the school and the Local Authority.

Following GDPR and confidentiality regulations, I create periodic assessments, reviews and reports and may attend meetings, if appropriate.
